Highlights
outline plan:
- start with the altar indicating we need a sacrifice for our sins before we can go to god
- Jesus was that sacrifice no other sacrifice
- BUT there’s one more sacrifice we need to make. our life nothing else
- being in the court with joy(?)
pastor’s intro comments on how some people find these details tedious to learn about, but we wanna learn the spiritual significance behind them
i missed this part but it has something about gripping the horns of the altar. read transcript!
1-8 the altar
9-19 the courtyard
some people say that the colours represent something something to do with christ. some people say that the width of the entrance represents God’s mercy.
but the bible never said so. so nah.
different kinds of people could go different distances from the outside of the court to the inside of the holy place
that is one of the reasons why Jesus came and died. he did the saving work. he separated the dividing veil that kept sinners from entering. the most holy place. Jesus opened the way to God.
but Jesus did not only tear down the dividing veil between God and man. he also tore down the dividing wall that separated Jews and Gentiles
- question: why did they have to be separated in the first place? for what purpose? sounds counterintuitive
it’s not a white man’s religion. anyone who confesses etc etc can be saved something something
they knew they could not come before a holy God with their sins. that is why there was an altar to sacrifice for their sins
- ADD THE FOLLOWING BIT HERE EVEN THO ITS ACTUALLY SAID AFTER THIS: there was only one altar for the entire nation of israel. and it was constantly being used.
what lesson can we learn today? today there are people who try to come to God by some other way.
when everything else fails, they assume there is a back door to heaven.
“well God is loving he is gracious and merciful, surly he will accept me”. no he won’t. there is no other way. sinners cannot come before a holy and just God. only through the sacrifice.
there is no other way only through the sacrifice.
there is one sacrifice we still need to make. and that is to present our lives to God. pastor then reads rom 12:1
he wants us to become that sacrifice. he wants us to consecrate ourselves to him.
the problem is they don’t want to give to God themselves. they do give to God things. they may be willing to give a certain amount of time. they may be willing to engage in spiritual services and church work. but they don’t give of themselves. yet without your self, they mean nothing.
God does not want your money, they time, your resources, without your SELF. you are the one God wants!
it is so sad that people try to substitute things for themselves. what God wants it for us to totally surrender and completely consecrate ourselves to him. and that is a most reasonable service.
the children of israel. there were numerous times they sang with great joy as they entered the court.
psalm 84.
each time they came into the court to offer their sacrifices, they came with great joy. they knew it was better to be with God in the courtyard, even just standing in the doorway, than to be out there in the world. is this the attitude of our hearts?
we no longer bring sacrifices, but those elements are still represented in our worship each time we come.
there are many things in life that fight for our attention and take our eyes way from God.
it could be extra money, pleasures, entertainment,
or even non-tangible things, bitterness, laziness, inconvenience
the question is will anything be able to keep us from worshipping God?
it is better for me to be in the house of God, even if it is only one day. even if it is standing in the doorway, we rather we here than elsewhere in the world
