Highlights
- link to second ex edit - approach God fearfully. thunder and lightning.
after God given ten commandments, now it was the israeliteās turn to respond.
what was the diference between these two occurrences? same lightning thunder trumpet sound. but the second time they were so fearful that they didnāt need to be warnedā¦
- it was because of the law.
- as soon as they found out the requirements of the law, they were terrified. why? because they realised they could not keep up with the law. they could not keep it perfectly. when they heard itā¦ they trembled at the thought of what it would be like when they stood before the almighty God to face His judgement.
- if simply hearing the law was such a terrifying experience, then how terrifying would it be to meet God after breakin it?
- this is how we should beā¦ each time we hear the Word of God, does it strike fear into our hearts? serious consequences.
we tend to put ourselves before other gods.
we resist authority. we lust. we take things belonging to others. we tear people down.
since the fall, no man is able to keep the commandments of God perfectly. we break them on a daily basis.
whenever people get into trouble, they get a lawyer. that is what they did here. they told moses to talk to them, not God to talk to them.
oftentimes we hear people say if only god would speak to me directly, personally, then i would beleive. people who make such requests really have no idea what they are asking, because anyone who has ever caught a glimpse of Godās glory, their hearts would be filled with fear. our God is an awesome and powerful God whose holiness would strike fearā¦
they needed a mediator: someone to speak because they could not bear to hear his voice. they were terrified.
the law did something in their hearts, something amazing. they saw their sins. they realised they could not stand before God. they needed someone to represent them.
the law cannot save.
the law was to test them, prove them.
as their mediatorā¦ ā this phrase is repeatedly used as the opening to several sentences explaining mosesā role as mediator. i can line these up i. rapidfire style to show what the mediator did.
- moses as a mediator was a type pointing to the Mediator in the new testament which is CHRIST.
if we could keeep the law we could be saved. but the problem is we cannot keep it perfectly. and because we cannot keep it perfectly, law condemns us. like the israelites we should be crying out with fear, crying for a mediator. this is how the law condemns us so that we start looking for a mediator, Jesus Christ. he did what law could not do. he is the only mediator we will ever need.
this is explained in hebrews 12!
the heavenly city is thatā¦ whose names are written in the book of life. BUT how is that possible? verse 24.
