📣 Does “keeping the Lord’s Day holy” only mean going to church? 🤔

Does the Sabbath principle still apply today? If so, why is it held on Sundays? What should and shouldn’t a Christian do on the Lord’s Day? What’s the right way to think about keeping the Lord’s Day holy? Which part of this commandment do Christians constantly forget about?

This is another polarising topic in Christianity today. In this sermon, Pastor Paul cuts through both sides of the spectrum (man-made rigidity VS antinomianism) to deliver the keys to truly understanding the purpose of the Christian Sabbath.

Highlights

There are only two things in the New Testament that are called the lord’s. the lords table and the lords day. In other words Jesus put his stamp of approval on the lord’s day.

Pastor’s point being that the lord’s day is very much still applicable and relevant to us today

We read this command as a command to rest, but we forget that is a command to work. God commands our rest and our work.

Having 6 days to work is a divine concession. A sign of grace. He could have commanded us to work every day. Be he did not do that.

These were not the laws of the sabbat. These are the extra biblical foolish laws of man. The sabbath the lord gives is a gift. It is not a burden by a delight. He gave it so man could be refreshed (Ex 31:17). The word means “to breathe”. in modern English, “to catch our breath”. So that man can stop and catch his breath.

As parents we have this responsibility to teach our children to rest on the sabbath. For whatever reason we do not come to church… soon our children will not be found in church.

(Paraphrasing) When God mentions the servants, he is teaching us that if you are an employer, you need to ensure your employees can rest

By keep the sabbath holy by committing ourselves to acts of worship. A convocation is gathering God’s people as a holy assembly for worship.

A day to attend to all the spiritual things.

In order to worship well, you and I need to be prepared. Getting ready the night before.

Thomas Watson describes the preparation of the heart. Sound a retreat, call your mind off from the world. Think of the great work of the next day. Tuning of the instrument.

Refreshed to worship God by prayer and the ministry of the word, singing of praises, celebrating sacraments, sharing fellowship. The heart which was frozen throughout the week, melts with the word.

THOUGHT: not about quoting amazing men, but having thoughts worthy for other men to quote you

How are you preparing your heart?

Watching television at night? Surfing the internet? Chatting with your friends? Then rushing to church. That is NOT RIGHT.

What about the attire you put on? Does it matter?

There are endless questions Chrsitianshave asked about what they can and cannot do on a Sunday.

All these questions are EASY TO ANSWER WHEN YOU AND I UNDERSTAND WHAT IT MEANS TO,,, TO BE IN FELLOWSHIP WITH THE LIVING GOD. DO YOU KNOW WHAT THE REAL STRUGGLE IS? WHEN WE ASK THESE QUESTIONS BECAUSE WE ARE LOOKING FOR EXCUSES. REASONS TO DO OUR OWN THINGS. WE MISS THE WHOLE POINT OF THIS 4TH COMMANDMENT.
