Highlights
The first few mins intro sounded intriguing I think
The majority of the first point was describing physical ways to break the commandment.
What about in business? At Work?
A good biblical principle to apply is proverbs …. A good name is to preferred than…
what about stealing in school?
One of the most common thefts is stealing time. When we keep people waiting we are stealing time. Time is precious.
It is a sin to steal time.
God takes a very serious view of stealing.
He requires restitution.
Int he bible if a man was found stealing… he must pay back double. He must not only return what was stolen but also give one of his own animals to the offended party.
There were instances in the bible were stealing was so serious that the offenders were killed, like Achan.
Why was stealing so serious that sometimes the penalty was death?
Like the rest fo the commandments, this commandment has deep spiritual…
Whenever we steal… we sin against God and our neighbour
Stealing is a sin against God in two ways:
- Failure to trust in God’s provision. We fail to exercise faith in trusting God’s provision and providence.
- It is an attack on God’s provision for OTHERS. We are robbed what God provided for someone else!
he is indicating that people have a right to own things. Only something that belongs to someone can be stolen from them. But the reason that anything belongs to anyone is because it comes from God!!!!!
- God is the Giver. You and I have no right to take for ourselves what God has given to others!
This brings us to the positive side of this commandment:
But Rather to receive things from God to use for His glory.
You and I are required to use what we have received from God in a way that would please Him.
So this commandment is NOT JUST about stealing, but it is also about STEWARDSHIP.
A steward is someone who cares for someone else’s property. He is not free to use it however he please, but only to do what the master/owner wants.
If we come into this world naked, and we leave this world naked, then everything we accumulate in this world is not ours(?).
He has given us the sacred responsibility to look after it.
This is the way ever since the beginning!
→ Adam did not own any property, he was just managing it!
Like Adam we are called to be good stewards of God’s property.
In the final analysis, some people will be reckoned as good stewards, others will be reckoned as unfaithful stewards. What kind of steward will you be in teh eyes of the almighty God?
Taking good care of the things we have been given. Especially in regards to God’s house!
Not being wasteful, squandering.
Good stewardship means working hard.
2 thes 3:10 “if you don’t work, don’t eat.”
To avoid temptation to steal, work hard for honest gains. And with the honest gains, we must help others in need!
It means helping to meet our family needs. We have been given an awesome responsibility to take care of our family!
There are 3 basic attitudes (towards things(?))
- Attitude of the thief
- What is mine is mine. Selfish atittude
- What is mine is God’s and I will share it with others!!!!
→ God wants us to have this attitude! We must be willing to share …
Most Christians deny that they steal from God
Like in Malachi. How did we rob him?
10% is a guide. In fact we should give more than that because God has given us so abundantly.
Another way to rob God is the failure to give Him the best of our time. Our talents. Our services.
We want to keep the best for ourselves. We want to pursue our dreams and aspirations. Only when we reach retirement do we want to consider serving God.
A couple has three sons.
Do you think God does not know our hearts? Withholding what we think is best from him? Do you think that is acceptable? Most certainly not.
He has blessed us with spiritual gifts! Hospitality, administration, teaching, preaching, music. When you and I do not exercise those gifts, it is a form of STEALING.
Do you realise that every one of the Ten Commandments is a form of stealing?
- when we use his name in vain we steal his honour.
- When we desecrate the sabbath, we steal his holy day
- Adultery we steal….
- Lie we steal the trutH
- And so forth
Every sin robs God.
Steals the glory(?)
This truth is best demonstrated by the fact that when our lord was crucified on the cross, there were two thieves beside him. Jesus said unto him, today shalt thou be with me in paradise.
In the true sense of the word, Jesus died for the thief. 🤯
What happens when we realise we have sinned and ask God to forgive us? We must be like Zaccheus. Immediately seek restitution.
We cannot go on living as thieves! Whether it be our tithes and offerings, our gifts, our services. We cannot do on living as thieves. We must repent, make restitution and live our lives with this attitude: what is mine is God’s. I am just a steward and I want to be a faithful steward, to the glory of His precious name.
