Matthew 5:13a, Ye are the salt of the earth:
Jesus said that the believers were the salt of the earth. What are the characteristics of salt?
- The first thing about salt is the colour; in its purest form, salt is white.
- The second thing about salt is the flavour; salt adds flavour to the food.
- The third thing about salt is that it stings; especially when it is applied to wounds.
- The fourth thing about salt is that it creates a thirst; it increases the body’s craving for water otherwise there will be dehydration which may result in death.
- The last thing about salt is that of preservation; salt has preserving qualities to stop meat from decaying.
Dear children, ye are the salt of the earth means to have the characteristics of salt in this world. Christians are to be purein their speech, thoughts and words. Christians are to add flavour and blessing to the world by living out the truth of the gospel. Christians are to sting the world by sharing God’s Word which will prick the man’s conscience - the unbelieving needs to be confronted of their sins through the gospel of Christ. Christians who live their lives being pure, a blessing to others and sharing God’s Word, will create a thirst for God in those who do not know Him. Finally, Christians who are indwelt with the Holy Spirit represent God’s presence in the unbelieving world and their lives act as a preservative to stop the unbelieving world from degenerating into further sin.
