1 Corinthians 16:13-14
¹³ Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.
¹⁴ Let all your things be done with charity.
TRANSCRIPT
I greet you in the blessed name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Today is our 37th anniversary, and I've chosen our text from 1 Corinthians, chapter 16 verses 13 to 14. Let me read for you, "Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong. Let all your things be done with charity." In the preceding chapter, the Apostle Paul spoke about the resurrection. If the resurrection is true, if the Believers will be raised from the graves, if we have the hope of the resurrection, then we must all live in view of the resurrection.
So here Paul stressed to the Corinthians four imperatives, four commands, and four verbs: be watchful, stand fast, be strong, and be loving. These will be the Four Points in our message. The title of our message is "Stand Fast in the Faith."
I. Be watchful
Firstly, be watchful -'watch ye'- means be alert, be vigilant. It has the idea of staying awake, not falling asleep. Remember in Matthew 26:40 when Jesus found his disciples sleeping, he said to Peter, "What, could you not watch with me for one hour?" Together with me? It has the same idea there. It is not so much about the disciples falling asleep physically, but rather they were spiritually sleeping because Jesus went on to say, "Watch and Pray, that ye enter not into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."
Why must we be watchful? 1 Peter chapter 5 verse 8 says, "Be sober, be vigilant…" Why? Because your adversary, the devil, is like a roaring lion walketh about seeking whom he may devour. The Christian must be sober. Again, it is an imperative, which means it is a command. To be sober means not to be intoxicated, not to be drunk. It is not so much about physical drunkenness but spiritual drunkenness. It means we must be sharp in our senses; we must be able to react wisely and accurately in the face of difficult situations. We all know that it is dangerous to drive when someone is drunk, right? Because his perception of things would be affected by the alcohol; his judgment has been impacted, and his reaction would be delayed. If he insists on driving, he will not only endanger his own life but also the lives of his passengers. In a similar fashion, in the spiritual sense, if a person is spiritually sleeping, not alert, his senses have been hindered; he cannot see, hear, or understand clearly. He's also in great danger, and if he has a family, he's leading his family; he is putting his family in great danger too.
The devil is the head of this worldly evil system, this evil system is opposed to God, and it will continue to increase in his wickedness up to the point, the time period, known as the Great Tribulation. So, the situation in this world is not getting better; it is getting worse. This world is full of the devil's lies, full of his deceptions, full of his immoral inferences, so much so that the people are spiritually drunk, sleeping. Look at all those unbelievers who are lost in the bondage of sin; they are heading toward eternal damnation forever and ever. They will burn in the Lake of Fire, and yet they still have a false sense of security and strength.
They see death at every corner, but they do not pause and ponder this pertinent question: 'Where does a man go when he dies? What shall a man do in order to be saved?' He's not interested in pondering this question. Millions of men and women have been intoxicated with this mentality to grab as much as they can in this world, to live life to the fullest, so to speak, to be accountable to no one, only themselves, as if this is the only life to live. It is so sad that they are spiritually drunk, incapable of understanding this great danger, and soon they will die in their sins and perish in eternal hell.
Believers must never live such a life and behave like the unbelievers. We must be watchful. We must be watchful of the temptations around us; we must not allow any form of wickedness to creep into our lives. Wickedness will come in the form of deception in a more subtle way. When you and I would think that it is not wicked at all, whether it is on the internet, on television, in the books we read, or in the ideologies and philosophies of this world, we allow a little bit of compromise here and there. We let our guards down; soon we will have the shock of our lives.
Take the internet, for example. Most certainly, there is a wealth of information on the internet. Every day we surf the web for information. But do we realize that we are searching for information in the midst of all the feuds, immoralities, worldliness, controversies, and deceptions? How can we protect ourselves and our children? Be watchful.
For those parents with younger children, you may want to consider setting strict rules whereby the only place to use the computer is in the living room, where everyone can see. For those parents with older children, it may be very hard to do that. It is very difficult to reverse what we have not done from the beginning, especially nowadays when our children have their own handphones. However, we can still some software to protect our children from being influenced by all these undesirable websites. They may not like it, they may be angry with it, but it is better to be watchful than to be sorry later on. We have to be watchful of our spiritual condition.
Most of us know if we are physically sick or unhealthy. But do we really know if we are spiritually unhealthy? When our body is weak, we immediately take vitamins and minerals to boost our immune systems. When we are sick, immediately we take medicine to get better. But when we have not been reading the bible, when we have not been prayerful, we have not been worshipping God, we have not been serving. When we have been watching movies all the time and no longer do our quiet time. Are we aware of our spiritual condition, are we concerned about it?
We must do whatever we can to stay spiritually healthy. We must utilise all the spiritual resources the church has offered to us, to guard, protect and maintain our spiritual walk with God. It is very sad when we see the Bible Witness magazines, the RPGs, the DHW notes left on the table and every month I gather them and store them somewhere. Members, regular worshippers, take those spiritual resources offered to you. It is by God's grace and mercy. Utilise them, protect yourself, guard yourself, and watch over your spiritual condition.
We have to be watchful of complacency. Remember the church in Laodicea, in Revelation 3 verse 16, which our Lord Jesus rebuked saying, "I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I would rather yet be cold or hot, but because you are lukewarm, neither cold nor hot, I will spue you out of my mouth." It is so easy to fall into the sin of complacency and be neither cold nor hot when our Christian life gets into a rut and we do the things we do because we have always been doing these things throughout the years. But we do not understand the spiritual significance of it.
Come Friday night, it is prayer meeting; come Saturday, it is YPG; come Sunday, it is the Lord's Day worship, followed by Sunday School, DHW bible classes, and Home Care Groups. Physically, we may be here, in body, but not in spirit. We are not eager, we are not excited, we are not receptive, we are not responding. When we walk out of the church, we totally forget what we have just learnt a moment ago. If we are watchful, we will not let that happen to us. We will remind ourselves constantly of the spiritual significance and why we do the things that we are doing. Why is it so important to us? It is for our spiritual growth. The Bible says, be watchful.
II. Stand fast
Secondly, Stand Fast in the Faith. Whenever we see the word 'faith' it can either be subjective faith as in our faith, how we trust and believe or it can mean the objective faith as in the gospel or the Bible. Here the definite article before the word faith tells us it is not our faith, as in our belief, but it is the objective faith - the word of God. In other words, we have to stand, fast and firm in the word of God. Satan cannot remove the word of God. He has tried to do so in the past throughout history but he has failed. But what Satan can do is obscure the word of God so that we do not have the accurate understanding, the right understanding. He wants us to have the wrong understanding and wrong thinking which will lead us to the wrong behaviour.
Isn't it true that some people when they misbehave themselves, they will quote scripture verses and say "But didn't the Bible say 'love will cover a multitude of sins?'" In other words, you can sin, as long as you have love. Can you see how dangerous it is? Satan cannot take away our salvation once we are saved, we will never lose our salvation. Jesus said, "And I give unto them eternal life, and they will never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand," John chapter 10 verse 28.
But what Satan wants to do is to cause us to live a life that will dishonour God and a way to do it is to cast doubt in God's word. That is why he sends false teachers, false preachers, and floods this world with all kinds of books to cause the people to be deceived by all these strange dark prints to confuse the people with different interpretations. So much so that we may think that we are standing on the foundation but in reality, we are standing on the wrong foundation, or on no foundation at all. Some people may ask all right we have to stand fast in the faith but how do we do that?
If you have your Bibles, maybe you can turn with me to 2 Thessalonians chapter 2 verse 15. There the Apostle Paul said to the Thessalonians, let me read for you, "Therefore, brethren, stand fast" – same word, and how do we stand fast – "hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle." When Paul used the word 'traditions' he was not referring to those man-made religious ideas that were contrary to scriptures or not based on scriptures. Jesus himself rejected the man-made religions and traditions of the scribes and Pharisees. The word 'tradition' simply means that which was passed down from one person to another, whether by word or our epistle.
The truth of the Gospel was first declared by Christ and the Apostles. Later, it was written by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. God's truth was not invented by men. It was handed down by God, to men. And every generation of Christians would have this tremendous awesome responsibility to guard the truth and pass it on to the following generation. This is the only way the church can be kept pure. This is the only way Bethel BP Church can be kept pure.
So as a church, we have this responsibility to pass this truth to the next generation. As an individual, as a member, you have the responsibility to stand with the church, uphold this truth, and then pass it on to the next generation. As a family, you have the responsibility to guard this truth and pass it on to your children. The primary responsibility to pass God's truth to your children does not rest on the Sunday School teachers; it is to you, the parents. At best, the Sunday School teachers would only re-emphasize what you have constantly been teaching your children at home because the command was given to you, parents. You must bring up your children in the fear and admonition of the Lord.
To stand fast means do not move away from the truth, whatever you have faithfully been taught in the word of God, hold on to it and never let it go. When this command was given, it implied that there would be certain forces that would try to move us away. That is why we have to stand fast. The devil will try to tempt us to move away from God's truth. People will say to us, 'I don't know whether you have heard it. The world has changed, times have changed, people have changed, so you must change too in your understanding and interpretation of God's word and the application.' Indeed, what they said about the world, the times, and the people are true, but one thing, the Bible does not change, and this is the Bible that we must stand fast, stand firm, build our foundation on. Everything will change, but not the Bible.
Have you ever watched the guards at Buckingham Palace in London, perhaps on television? Some of you may have the privilege to visit London and to see it in person. The guards would stand at attention, and the crowds come and go, but the guards stood still. The people may marvel at them or laugh at them or make funny faces at them, and take pictures of them, but the guards remain unmovable. Nothing can move them from their appointed places. In the same manner, we must guard this precious faith. We must not be moved by the wiles of the devil.
See, the devil is very cunning. This world has always been attacking the Bible, having all kinds of views about the Bible. They attack the inspiration of scriptures, they attack the preservation of scriptures. The theories of this world may be many: evolution and now theistic evolution, new theories are coming up every now and then. The movements are many, the ecumenical movement uniting all the religions in this world, the feminist movement, and the gay movement. The wiles of the devil, are so crafty and diversified. But we must not be moved. The Bible says, "Stand Fast in the faith, build your foundation in the word of God, and remain steadfast. Do not be shaken; do not be moved because the Bible does not change. We must hold on to God's word, not in a careless way. Holy Family, never let it sleep.' So each generation who has received this truth must guard it, and pass it on to the next generation, keeping it pure so that the next generation can have the purity of God's word and drink it to the satisfaction of their souls.
Today we are celebrating our 37th anniversary. But can you imagine how sad it would be if five years down the road this church has departed from the word of God? How tragic - no more Bible studies, no more Church camps, no more youth camps. The Sunday school is all about games and parties; the young people's group is all about outings. The Sunday sermon is only 10 to 15 minutes where the preacher talks about world events, politics, and cracks some jokes. When that happens, our families, our children, will have nothing to build their lives upon, no foundation at all. That's why the Bible says, "Stand Fast in the faith." It begins with us, this generation. Hold on to this truth, and pass it on to the next generation, our children's generation, by the grace of God. Hold on to this truth, pass it on to the next generation, for as long as the Lord Jesus would tarry in his return.
III. Be strong
Our third point is, "Be strong." "Quit you like men; be strong." Some people may be confused with this phrase, 'Quit you like men,' and they take it to mean 'give up.' Like men quit, give up. Well, this is written in Old English. 'Quit you like men' means behave like men, behave in the way man should behave. That is why the old English would often use phrases like 'quit yourselves like men and fight,' meaning fight like a man. So here, what it means is to behave yourselves in the way a man should behave. Be strong.
Those people who make fun of the King James Bible must understand that the King James Bible was translated in the 1600s when the English language was at its apex, the best, the purest. Now, 500 years have come and gone; the standard of English has not improved, it has gotten worse. The reason why sometimes we do not understand all these old English words is because we have changed, not for the better, but for the worse. So we should not blame the King James Bible; we should blame ourselves.
When you stand fast in the faith, what will happen? You will face hostility, rejection, opposition, and even persecution. Therefore, what you need is spiritual strength. You see, when you speak against false doctrines, when you share the gospel, when you refuse to join the majority, you're willing to stand with the minority because of the truth, when you are ostracized in your workplace, in your school, in society because you are a Christian, you refuse to do anything that contradicts the Bible, you need spiritual strength. It is the kind of strength that comes from within through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit.
Ephesians 3 verse 16 says "to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man." The outer man, the physical body, may be weak; soon, he will die. But the inner man is strong. A believer who is strong cannot be a spiritual child; he or she has to grow up. That is why Paul says, "Quit you like men, do not behave like a child, behave like a man, be strong."
There was a time when you and I were spiritual children. No one can become a spiritual adult overnight; we do not all of a sudden become spiritually strong. There has to be a process of time for us to grow, but the point is that we must grow, every day of our lives we must grow. If we are not growing, something is wrong. 1 Peter chapter 2, verse 2 says there was a time when we were spiritual newborn babes. We desired the milk of the word; we loved to drink the milk of God's word, as in the elementary teachings of the Bible. We love them; we want to grow by drinking all these elementary doctrines. But we have to move on from milk to solid food. We cannot always be drinking milk; we cannot always remain and dwell in the basic Bible knowledge classes. We have to grow and engage ourselves in things hard to understand.
So in a Sunday School, you see the children asking the Sunday School teachers questions, basic Bible questions. Then in the youth, they have grown, and they ask much more complicated, complex questions. And then in the adults, in the home care groups, they are engaged in things hard to understand, and they have to search and search the scriptures. We have to grow.
The word 'be strong' means to be strengthened, in a sense, you and I cannot strengthen ourselves. That is the Lord's work. No one can say, 'I am going to be strong; I don't care; I am going to be strong, and I am strong.' No, we cannot do that. What we can do is to humbly submit ourselves to God, and He will strengthen us. Remember, Philippians 4 verse 13 says, "I can do all things through Christ, which strengtheneth me." Who is the one who strengthens us? Christ, our Lord and God, has taught us how to be strong in Christ. In Ephesians 6:13, many of you would be very familiar with the armour of God. The Bible tells us, if you want to be strong, put on the whole armour of God: "having your loins girt about with truth, having on the breastplate of righteousness, your feet shod with the gospel of peace, above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall quench all the fiery darts of the wicked, and taking the helmet of salvation, the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God" - and finally – " praying always with all prayers and supplications in the spirit."
What it means is that if we want to be strong in the Lord, firstly, we must always guard ourselves with God's truth. Temptations will come; they will always come every day of our lives; we will face temptations of all sorts. Our Lord Jesus has taught us how to deal with temptation. Remember when Jesus was in the wilderness for 40 days and 40 nights, the devil tried to tempt him in the lust of the eye, the lust of the flesh, and the pride of life. Repeatedly, Jesus said, "It is written, it is written, it is written." You and I can only say, "It is written" when we know what is written. That is why we must hold God's truth like a belt, tight around the waist, never let it go.
To put on the breastplate of righteousness does not mean we put on the imputed righteousness of Christ because we cannot put on something that God had already clothed us with; we are permanently clothed with Christ's righteousness if we are true believers. Throughout this life, throughout all eternity, here it means to put on our practical righteousness, as in we must live a godly and righteous life, obeying God and His word.
To shod our feet with the gospel of peace means to stand in the confidence of what Jesus Christ had done for us on the cross of Calvary. You know, a moment ago, we had partaken of the Lord's Supper; this is the best way for us to be reminded of what Jesus had done for us - His body that was crucified on the cross, His blood that was shed for the remission of our sins. Today we have this peace with our God, and we can have this peace of our God.
To take up the shield of faith is to trust and believe in the almighty God. When God says, He is able to keep you from falling and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy - you know, this is a verse that we always quote in the benediction. I've done this many times, so many times that I've forgotten how many times. At the end of the service, I will read this verse, and all of us will say, "Amen." God means exactly what He says; He will do exactly what He says He will do, and we believe Him. And that faith is our protection, the shield of faith.
To take the helmet of salvation is to rest upon the assurance of God who has saved us. He will continue to save us, and He will save us to the uttermost. The devil will try to cast doubts on our salvation, but we know that our salvation does not depend on us; it depends on God. He will keep us. That is why the believers will never be lost. If it depends on us, then surely we will be lost, but because it depends on Him, He will keep it. And the Word of God is our protection. It must not only be carried in our hands; some of us carry Bibles to church - good. But it must be carried in our hearts because that is where all the attacks are focused on. Proverbs 4 verse 23 says, "Keep thy heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life." Keep our hearts with what? With the word of God. Protect your heart with the word of God. And finally, we must pray and commit ourselves into God's hands. That is how God strengthens us; that is how we can become strong in the Lord. Put on the whole armour of God.
IV. Be loving
Dear friends, perhaps you are watchful, and you are also standing fast in the faith; you are very strong and firm. But there is one more thing you need, and that is love. This brings us to our last point, "Be loving." "Let all your things be done with charity," which means love.
Love for who? Remember the greatest commandment: "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets," Matthew 22, verses 37-40. In other words, if we truly believe, truly take all these two verses very seriously, then whatever we do will be done with this love for God, with this love for others.
Notice Paul spoke about truth first, 'stand fast in the faith', and then he proceeded to say, 'Love, be loving.' Our love must always be based on the truth. If you love someone, you want that person to know the truth; you want that person to live out the truth and glorify God. You are willing to do whatever it takes to help the person achieve that; you are willing to be misunderstood; you are willing even to be persecuted. That is love. Love and truth are like the two sides of the same coin; they cannot be separated.
If you remember 1 Corinthians 13, that wonderful chapter about love, the Apostle Paul taught us. Let me read for you, Paul said in verse 1 "Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels and have no charity or love, I am become as a sounding brass or a tinkling cymbal" - without love, I'm just a bunch of noise – "And though I have the gift of prophecy and understand all mysteries and all knowledge and though I have all faith so that I could remove mountains and have not charity, I am nothing." I may do all these amazing things - preaching God's word, I may have great faith. But without love, I'm nothing. "And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor" – what a wonderful thing to do, giving all your money to the poor, that is incredible, that is great. "And though I give my body to be burned," that is even greater. Can you imagine giving your body to be burned, to be martyred? But Paul says, 'and have not charity" - if I have no love - "it profiteth me nothing."
In other words, a person may die for the truth, but if he dies without love in his heart, without love for God, without love for his neighbour, his death means nothing. We can be very watchful, but without this love for God and for others, it is meaningless. We can stand fast in the faith, but without this love, at best, it will be legalism; at worst, it will be hypocrisy. We can be very strong, very, very strong, but without love, we will be a cold, hard-hearted person. It is meaningless. We must have love.
So dear friends, as we serve the Lord in all the ministries of this church that He has blessed us with, as we come to church to fellowship with one another, as we attend all the spiritual programs, as we are contributing to the needs whenever we see it as a need, we evangelize, we discipleship, we preach the word, we must have love. And this love must be built upon God's truth. "Let all your things be done with charity." Everything that we do, even the thoughts that we think, the words we speak, be done with love.
37 years is a long time, but it has come and it has gone. If God were to give us one more year to live, how should we live this one year? What kind of a Christian should we be? We must be a Christian who is watchful, a believer who will stand fast in the faith, be unmovable. The world may change, times may change, and people may change, but the Bible does not change, and we are unmovable. Be strong. There was once we were spiritual children, but we have grown to be spiritual adults. "Quit you like men, be strong." Don't be like spiritual children; grow up and then be loving. Because without love, everything is meaningless. Let us pray.
Father in Heaven, we thank Thee for enabling us to consider this portion of scriptures. Thy word is so true, and even as we come together to give thanks to Thee for 37 years of ministry, 37 years of fellowship, 37 years where lives come and go, we see Thy hands working in our midst. If Thou wert to give us another year, how should we live our lives? What kind of a believer should we be? In the final analysis, we will have to stand before Thee in the Day of Reckoning. We want to be approved by Thee. So we want to be someone who is watchful, someone who will stand fast in the faith, unmovable, someone who is strong, who has grown from strength to strength, and someone who is loving. All this we endeavour to do by Thy strength, by Thy grace and mercy, through the glory of Thy precious name. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
