Exodus 20:17
~2 min read
“Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.” (Exodus 20:17)
To covet is to want something or someone that does not belong to you; it is to want very much what someone else has. No one would steal without first wanting the very thing he or she steals. This tenth commandment teaches us that we are not to be worried all the time about things and about what other people have which we do not have. Rather than being envious, greedy and always wanting the possessions of others, it is much better that we learn to be content and happy with the things that God has already graciously provided for us.
People, who are jealous of other people’s possession, often forget their own blessings. Instead they complain against God. If you truly have a need, why not tell God about your need instead of coveting. God’s law is the secret key for happiness and contentment. Hebrews 13:5b says….and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
