Exodus 20:14
~3 min read
Adultery means taking someone else’s husband or wife and treating him or her as your own. This commandment has to do with keeping ourselves and others pure. In the beginning, God created Adam, and Genesis 2:18 says, And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him. Subsequently, God created Eve out of Adam’s rib.
In the New Testament, Jesus also says, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder (Matthew 19:4-6). Marriage was instituted by God at the very beginning.
The physical union between a husband and wife was God’s idea in the first place. It was for the goodness of mankind that Adam may have a help meet and they could be fruitful and multiply (Genesis 1:28). But instead of being faithful husband and wife, people look for relationships outside of marriage. Not only did they destroy their own families, but they also destroyed other families. Can you imagine, daddy and mummy are divorced, leaving the children without parental care and love? It is a terrible sin in the sight of God.
We must also keep ourselves pure by guarding our thoughts against lust. Jesus says, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart (Matthew 5:28). Our God is holy and righteous, and His standard is perfect, and expects us to be holy as well (c.f. 1 Peter 1:16). Therefore, we must be careful to guard our thoughts that we may not sin against Him.
