James 5:12
Have you ever heard people say, “I swear to God, or I swear to heaven, or I swear upon my head”? Why do they do that? It is to strengthen what they say, to make the people believe that what they say is true. Christians must not do that!
Firstly, we are in no control over the things we swear upon, whether it be God, heaven or our head. Secondly, our words must be truthful in themselves that they need not be “backed-up” by anything else.
Thus, James 5:12 said, But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation (c.f. Matthew 5:33-37).
Dear children, we must not swear, and always be truthful. Let our yes, be truly yes, and our no, be truly no! Do not live the life of a liar who has to falsely “back-up” his lies with swearing words. People who do that, will be judged by God!
