“…there are two wills; one is perfect and the other is corrupt…”
Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:10b)
Oftentimes, we hear believers pray “Thy will be done,” but do they really mean what they pray? Do they understand what it means? What does it mean to pray, thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven? Firstly, we need to understand that God’s will is perfect!
I. Understanding God’s Will Is Perfect
God is perfect, and therefore His ways and will are also perfect. Psalm 18:30, As for God, his way is perfect” Man’s ways and will are imperfect because he is sinful, and his sinfulness contributes to all the problems of this world. So, there are two wills; one is perfect and the other is corrupt. God’s will is perfect, and man’s will is always tainted with sin. When the believer sees all the sin and wickedness on this earth, he is sad and troubled, and therefore, he desires for God’s perfect will in heaven to be mirrored on the earth. He desires to see the people living righteously and serving God’s glory, so he prays, thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
II. Pray With Understanding
When we pray such a prayer, we need to understand what it means? What is God’s will? God wants us to understand His will, and He has revealed it to us in His Word, the Bible. Let me give you some examples, it is God’s will that; we be saved (Galatians 1:3-4), submit to the authority (1 Peter 2:13-15), keep ourselves pure (1 Thessalonians 4:3), give thanks for everything (1 Thessalonians 5:18), etc. In fact, everything that is written in the Bible (commandments, promises, warnings, blessings, judgments and so forth) are God’s will for us. Therefore, we need to study the Bible, understand what we ought to do and not to do, and if we obey everything God says, we will do well!
III. Pray With Faith And Assurance
Some may pray “Thy will be done,” but they do not believe that God’s will be perfect. Others may pray “Thy will be done,” but they do not understand what His will is. Yet others may pray “Thy will be done,” but they do not trust that God will answer their prayer. That is why some people may pray this prayer, but in their hearts, they secretly want their own will to be done rather than God’s will.
Dear children, when we pray, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven, we must understand that God’s will is perfect, and we pray understanding His will through the Bible, and we pray with faith and assurance in our hearts.
