Matthew 6:9b

“…people use words like “Gosh” or “Jeez” to refer to God and Jesus…”
Today, names do not mean much to us except like some convenient labels to identify the people with. But in ancient times, a person’s name was closely related to who he was; his identity and reputation. How much more important were the names of God which described His attributes and nature? God’s names are important whether in time past or today, for He is eternal. Just to cite a few examples of God’s names:
- God was known by the name Elohim which acknowledged Him as the Creator (Genesis 1:1).
- God was known by the name Jehovah which acknowledged Him as the Redeemer (Genesis 7:16, Matthew 1:21).
- God was known by the name Jehovah Jireh which acknowledged Him as the Provider (Genesis 22:14).
- Most importantly, the Second Person in the Triune God came into this world and died on the cross of Calvary, and His name is Jesusfor He shall save His people from their sins (Matthew 1:21).
The word hallowed means to sanctify or make holy. And hallowed be thy name is a command, which means we must honour, glorify and esteem God’s name highly.
Dear children, how can we hallow God’s name? Firstly, we must not swear in His name like the way people say “I swear in Jesus’ name” but just simply speak the truth at all times. We must not profane His name like the way people use words like “Gosh” or “Jeez” to refer to God and Jesus. We must not profane His titles like the way people say “Go to hell” because God alone is the ultimate Judge to send a person to hell. Ultimately, we must remember that as Christians we bear the name of Christ, and therefore we must live a godly life that reflects His presence in our lives.
