Matthew 5:5

Matthew 5:5, Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
What is the meaning of meek? Meek means gentle or humble. The difference between poor in spirit (v.3) and meek (v.5) is that poor in spirit focuses on our sinfulness, while meekness focuses on God’s holiness. Meekness will make us humble by seeing how holy and righteous God is.
- Meekness is one of the characteristics of the believers.
- Meekness is one of the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22)
- Meekness does not mean weakness, but rather power put under control or the ability to exercise self-control (c.f. Proverbs 16:32). An example is a strong animal (e.g. horse or ox) which is tamed by a trainer to do some useful work. In other words, the meek is someone who is able to control his anger, emotions and feelings.
- Meekness is the opposite of pride, violence and vengeance.
- Meekness is not the lack of conviction, and he is not afraid to speak and defend the truth.
There are many biblical examples about meekness i.e. Abraham (Genesis 13:8), Moses (Number 12:3), Paul (2 Corinthians 10:1), and most importantly, Jesus Christ (1 Peter 2:21-23). The spirit of meekness is the spirit of Christ!
Dear children, what does it mean to inherit the earth? After God created man in His own image, He promised to give him dominion over the whole earth. But due to the fall of man, that inheritance was lost. One day, the believers will regain the promised inheritance when Christ returns and they will rule together with Him for one thousand years. Those believers who will rule with Christ are characterised by meekness and not pride.
