Matthew 5:8
Matthew 5:8, Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
Someone once said that this is the most important beatitude. The reason is because man’s greatest problem is sin, and sin primarily has to do with the heart. And this particular beatitude deals with the heart! Similar to all the other beatitudes, Jesus was speaking about the believer who was born again (John 3:5) and whose heart had been transformed (Ezekiel 36:26).
What is the meaning of pure in heart?
The heart is the sum total of the mind, emotions and will. The mind refers to our understanding, the emotion refers to our feelings, and the will refers to our making decisions or commitments. In other words, the heart is the real “you,” the inner man (Proverbs 23:7). The word pure means to be cleansed from dirt, filth and contamination.
- Positional purity – When God saves us, He covers us with Christ’s righteousness and He imputes His purity to us. So, at the point of our salvation, positionally we are made pure; in God’s eyes, we are justified, righteous and pure!
- Practical purity – But that does not mean we are perfectly pure, for everyday of our lives, we have to be cleansed and sanctified. We are commanded to be holy as God is holy. That is our practical purity!
- Ultimate purity – One day, we will be perfectly pure. 1 John 3:2, Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
How can we be pure in heart?
- We are unable to live a single holy moment without God’s help, guidance and power. Proverbs 20:9, Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin? The answer is, none!
- We must abide in God’s Word. John 15:3, Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. When we study God’s Word and apply it into our lives, God will cleanse, sanctify and make us pure.
- We must be controlled by the Holy Spirit. Galatians 5:16, This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
- We must pray. Psalm 51:10, Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
Dear children, do you know what is the result of being pure in heart? Jesus said, for they shall see God. It does not mean we can see God visibly, but rather we will see and understand God with our spiritual eyes. The more we understand God’s truth and live in righteousness, the more we will see and understand God!
