Matthew 5:9
Matthew 5:9, Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
The Bible begins with peace in the Garden of Eden, and ends with peace in eternity. But in between, something happened, the peace was disrupted when man fell into sin. Because of sin, there is no peace between God-and-man, and man-and-man. Through the death of Jesus Christ on the cross, man is able to have peace with God, and with man as well. Jesus became the peace of all who place their faith in Him.
I. What is the meaning of peace?
This peace is not the absence of trouble or worldly peace; it is an inner peace that only God can give to us. John 14:27, Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
II. Who is the source of peace?
- God the Father — Both in the Old and New Testaments, God is called the God of peace (c.f. Psalm 29:11, 2 Thessalonians 3:16).
- God the Son — It is only through the work of Christ on the cross that man can have this peace (c.f. Ephesians 2:13-14).
- God the Holy Spirit — The Holy Spirit is the agent of this peace. Every believer who has the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, will produce the fruit of peace in his or her life (cf. Galatians 5:22-23).
III. Who are the peacemakers?
The peacemakers are the believers in Jesus Christ. It does not mean believers can create peace, but rather they are messengers of peace. The believer is someone who has made peace with God (Romans 5:10), he leads others to make peace with God through the Gospel (2 Corinthians 5:18-20), and he helps others make peace with others (Matthew 18:15-17).
IV. What is the outcome?
Verse 9b, …for they shall be called the children of God.
Dear children, as God’s peacemakers, we are promised the glorious blessing of eternal sonship in His eternal kingdom. Peacemaking is a characteristic of the children of God. A person who is not a peacemaker is either a non-Christian or a disobedient Christian. Are you a peacemaker?
