Matthew 5:3

Matthew 5:3, Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
What is the meaning of poor in spirit? The word poor means to shrink, cower, or cringe like the way beggars would crouch and beg for alms. It is to recognize that without God, one is lost, hopeless and spiritually dead and to beg for God’s grace and mercy. There is no more pride, self-righteousness and self-confidence. It is a spiritual poverty!
Why is poor in spirit a blessing? Firstly, it is because Jesus said so. Secondly, it is because theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Humility is the only way a person can enter into the kingdom of heaven as he will acknowledge his need for God. Thirdly, the person who enters into the kingdom of heaven is a believer and therefore he is indwelt with the Holy Spirit, and through the Spirit, he will produce spiritual fruits. Fourthly, he will be exalted (Luke 14:7-11).
Dear children, can you see how blessed it is to be poor in spirit? The person who is poor in spirit is humble (Luke 18:9-14) and repentant (Psalm 51:17). He will turn his eyes away from himself and look to God, and he will be saved. God will lift him up, and he will not give opportunity for sin, and he will be prayerful. What a blessing! Are you such a person?
