Matthew 5:4

Matthew 5:4, Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
What is the meaning of blessed are they that mourn? The word mourn is the strongest kind of grief, like grieving for the dead. It is not just an external weep but an inner agony and deep pain. Like the picture of a beggar who was desperately poor, with one hand he covered his face in shame and with the other hand he reached out for help. The believer who understands his spiritual poverty will deeply grieve in his heart as he reaches out to God to save him.
Why is it a blessing to mourn? Grieving for one’s spiritual condition is the convicting work of the Holy Spirit, and it will lead the person to confess and repent of his sins. The promise is that they shall be comforted because God will forgive their sins (c.f. Psalm 32:1-2).
Dear children, if you are a true believer, you have the Holy Spirit dwelling in you (Romans 8:9). Each time you sin, the Spirit of God will convict your heart causing you to grieve because of (1) what sin has done to you, (2) the spiritual struggle, and (3) losing the joy of your salvation (you will not lose your salvation but you will lose the joy that salvation brings). That grief will lead you to confession and repentance, and you will receive God’s forgiveness and be restored. Thus, as a child of God, Jesus says to you, Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
