Matthew 28:1-7
Today is Resurrection Sunday, and churches all over the world are commemorating the resurrection of Christ. Indeed, the resurrection of Christ is the most crucial doctrine; it is at the very heart of the gospel. Without the resurrection, Christ’s death on the cross would be nothing but an awful tragedy.
After Christ was crucified and died on the cross at Calvary, His body was laid in a sepulchre. On the third day, which was Sunday, Mary Magdalene and others went to the sepulchre with spices to anoint His body. Suddenly, there was a great earthquake and an angel of the Lord appeared and rolled away the stone from the door of the tomb. All the Roman soldiers who were guarding the tomb froze in fear.
But the angel of the Lord said to the women, He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay (Matthew 28:6). What did the women see in the tomb? It was empty, for Christ had risen!
Dear children, the empty tomb was the evidence of the resurrection, and it was proof that Jesus had conquered death. Through His death, the shedding of His precious blood, and His resurrection, Jesus has saved us. He came to save us completely, for Jesus said, because I live, ye shall live also (John 14:19). One day, we will die and be buried in the graves. But our bodies will be raised from the graves when Jesus comes in the clouds for us. What greater assurance and comfort do we need in this life than to know that we will be resurrected! However, we must not keep this great truth to ourselves, but rather like the women who were instructed to go quickly and tell the other disciples that He had risen from the dead (v.7). We must likewise go and tell others about the gospel of our risen Saviour.
